Shemas Eivers is the MD of Client Solutions and he was at a meeting I also attended recently. Shemas was asking about tools for SEO and when I replied that blogs are the most powerful tool I know of for increasing SEO, Shemas didn’t seem to believe me. Fair enough.
Shemas this post is for you!
Why are blogs so good at increasing a website’s SEO?
- Every blog post has its own url (so each post can be linked to individually – this leads to increased inward linkage)
- Search engines love content and a blog encourage the constant addition of content to a site
- Search engines love fresh content and blogs promote that too
- A blog, if named (blog title, sub-head, and posts) configured properly (short permalinks) can own a particular key word/phrase for all search engines
- Search engines love links (inward or outward) and blogs with their blogrolls, links within posts and discussions promote that lots of linkage
There are plenty more good reasons why blogs punch way above their weight when it comes to search engines – please feel free to add more in the comments.
Shemas, if you do a Google search for Shemas Eivers right now, why do you think the top ranking sites are blogs?

Couldn’t agree more.
I implemented blogs for the company I work for and within two weeks our sales director had jumped from page 18 (when searching for his name) on Google to the number two spot.
Blogs are by far and away the best SEO tool around.
You missed something above, but still used it… tags.
From looking at my logs, while most of the incomming readers are from search engines, quite a few (25%) come from tag searches (Technorati mostly). I actually suspect some of the tags are the search terms.
In practice tags are the meat information of the post, but usually more relevant.
Stuart blogs do help alot for SEO, but to say they are best tool for SEO is a stretch.
I mean it is very easy to optimize for someones name, and I can do it for a static page without even using a blog.
Wow such a wonderful blog Tom, hope its not only meant for Shemas but also for all the visitors of this blog. i do agree that the search engines loves to crawl only the contents that too blog is satisfying it, so just because of it website is holding good PR and traffic.
hi Tom its really a great and interesting post that blogs are increasing website traffic. i do agree to your comment that ” blogs are so good at increasing a website’s SEO”. keep posting informative and useful post like this.
About 2 months back i started my blog tweaked it a bit, used some seo plugins and today i get decent amount of traffic to the blog.
I’m the daily blog reader. I come to know that in practice tags are the meat information of the post, but usually more relevant. I mean it is very easy to optimize for someones name, and I can do it for a static page without even using a blog.
Another great thing about blogs is that they ping the search engines. This means that when you submit a post it pings the bots to come and scan your fresh new content. So, with a blog you will get index faster and have better success of getting more pages indexed.
